The Nigerian Nationwide League One is not only the biggest sports league in Nigeria, but also one of the biggest on the entire African continent, featuring more than 300 registered clubs and more than 13.000 players
The league is not only interesting because of its size, but also due to its grassroots character in a country that lives football. All clubs that are aiming to compete in the country’s premier or second league, or players looking to make a name for themselves in football, are almost guaranteed to start their journey in NLO.
It is then no accident that over 70% of the country’s top football prospects and Nigeria National Team players (U-17, U-20, U-23 and Upper Eagles) originated from the league. Names such as Ahmed Musa and Victor Osmihen are surely well known to an average football fan, but certainly not a lot of them would know that these two players, like many other global stars of Nigerian origin, marked their beginnings exactly in the Nationwide League One.
