The stage is set for Super Bowl 2025! After 284 matches played, only one more remains. The most important football match on the planet. It will be a matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, a matchup we saw in a Super Bowl 2023, when Chiefs started building their legacy. Now the Eagles are looking for revenge in a championship match set to be played in Caesars Superdome, New Orleans.
The Chiefs trying to win its fifth trophy, and the Eagles wanting to lift only their second.
How the Chiefs and Eagles Paved Their Way to Super Bowl LIX
The 2024 NFL season gave us everything we love about football – thrilling games, shocking upsets, and unforgettable performances. From the first kickoff in September to the playoff battles, this season was real entertainment. Preseason favorites like the Chiefs, Eagles, Ravens and Lions came in with big expectations, but only two teams managed to stay consistent and deliver when it mattered most.
The Kansas City Chiefs, led by their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, looked every bit like defending champions during the regular season. Not because they were attractive but because they played with a lot of attitude. Not once in a regular season did they score more than 30 points, they had a lot of one possession wins, but calmly collected all those W’s with experience. And maybe a bit of luck. And the help of the refer… nope, that’s another topic – the Chiefs fully deserved another Super Bowl appearance.
They finished a regular season with 15-2 to clinch the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. And after the Wild Card bye, they beat the Texans and Bills to advance to their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance. They are trying to win a third consecutive Lombardi trophy, something no team has ever done in NFL history!
The Philadelphia Eagles finished as a #2 seed, with a 14-3 on the NFC side of the table. They entered the season with a lot of unknowns, and were 2-2 after the first four weeks. But all offseason new signings were just warming up, especially on the defensive side. Experienced Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio came to Philadelphia, combined with good signings LB Zack Baun, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and some good draft picks – CB Quinyon Mitchell and DB Cooper DeJean, made the Eagles once again one of the best defensive teams in an NFL season. And yes, RB Saquon Barkley also came this offseason. He was so efficient that he is the only non-QB player shortlisted for the MVP award.
Breaking Down the Team Stats Ahead of Super Bowl LIX
The Super Bowl 2025 could be a real battle of defenses. The Philadelphia Eagles are statistically the best defensive team of the league. But the Chiefs are not far behind, they sit at ninth place.

The main focus of the Philadelphia Eagles is definitely a run game. With Saquon Barkley as their main running back, the Eagles had 3,048 rush yards this season, second most of the season, just behind the Baltimore Ravens. If we add a mobile quarterback Jalen Hurts to the mix, you get a team able to run its way to the Lombardi trophy. Not a fan favorite way (unless you are an Eagles fan) but it gets results. Barkley was only the ninth player in NFL history, who got over 2,000 rushing yards in a single season.
The passing game is a bit of a problem for the Eagles, as A.J. Brown lost a part of his connection with Hurts. But if they repeat what we saw in an NFC Championship match against the Washington Commanders, aerial attack could also be a real problem for the Chiefs defense.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t have that clear workhorse like the Eagles. They are a threat all-around. Patrick Mahomes has many aerial targets, not even Travis Kelce is as lethal as he was before. Isiah Pacheco is leading the running game and even missed some matches due to injury, so Kareem Hunt took over. And Patrick Mahomes is not as attractive as before, but is efficient. The Chiefs’ defense once again led the way and got some big plays. It is an experienced, well covered team with a severe ”Next Man Up” mentality. All led by experienced coach Andy Reid, Kansas City is dreaming of becoming the first franchise in history with three consecutive Super Bowl trophies.
Quarterback position: Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts Lead Super Bowl LIX Showdown
The quarterback battle in Super Bowl LIX features two of the most exciting talents in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes continues to redefine the quarterback position with nearly 4,000 passing yards this season. He threw 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, making some impossible plays to his teammates. With a leader mentality, he never backed down, even when his top target Rashee Rice got injured all the way back in Week 4.

On the other side, Jalen Hurts has once again proven himself as a dual-threat leader, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and rushing for more than 600 yards. His 14 rushing touchdowns put him in TOP 5 even among running backs. There were some questions early in the season regarding his ability to lead this team to the Super Bowl, but he silenced them all in the second part of the season. Even with his knee injury and concussion scare from Week 15, he remains irreplaceable for the team.
Running back position: Saquon Barkley and Kareem Hunt Face Off in Super Bowl Clash
One of the most talked about offseason signings is definitely Saquon Barkley. Who changed teams inside his division and went from New York Giants jersey to a Philadelphia Eagles jersey. And in his first season as an Eagle, showed why he was #2 draft pick back in 2018.
2,005 rushing yards in the regular season in 16 matches he played are for the history books. As he was only ninth player in history to surpass that 2,000 yards mark. Only a decision to rest him in Week 18 probably kept him from an all-time rushing yards record. He scored five touchdowns only in the Playoffs, three of them were to the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game. Philadelphia is a run heavy team, and Barkley is the leader.

Kareem Hunt on the other side is a bit of a surprise to be the running leader for the Chiefs this season. But this is due to the Isiah Pacheco injury that forced him to miss 10 weeks. Hunt rushed for 728 yards and scored seven touchdowns this season, remining everyone that this veteran is still dangerous when given the ball with the right offensive line. His return to Kansas City can also get him his first Super Bowl ring. With healthy Pacheco and efficient Hunt, the Chiefs can really run the field.
Wide receiving position: Youth vs. Experience – Worthy vs. Brown for Super Bowl Trophy
Not a lot of fans thought Xavier Worthy and A.J. Brown will play the roles they have now in their teams.
Worthy was a first round draft pick. Everybody thought that the rookie will have a supporting role in the receiving corps, behind Kelce and Rice. But Rice got injured, Kelce was quiet most of the season, so Worthy took over. After a couple of weeks of adapting with his quarterback superstar, Worthy finished the regular season with more than 600 receiving and more than 100 rushing yards. Adding a total of nine touchdowns. An average of 10.8 yards per catch is pretty impressive for a rookie. But Patrick Mahomes has a way of making everyone better.

If you had to make a bet ahead of season, what WR’s will be a Pro Bowl pick, A.J. Brown would probably be one of your top predictions. But something was off between Brown and Hurts this season. ”Only” 1,000 receiving yards is not even a TOP 15 yardage this season. Things were so off that Brown had to seek some inner help. An image of him reading a book ”Inner Excellence” on the sidelines was one of the season highlights. But against the Commanders we saw a glimpse of that Brown’s Pro Bowl level. Six receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown is something the Eagles need in the Super Bowl if they want that Lombardi trophy.
