Countries Making Their World Cup Debut in 2026

The 23rd Edition of the FIFA World Cup is right around the corner and we can’t wait for it to kick off on June 12th. Every World Cup has its first-timers. The underdogs no one knows much about — until they pull off a shocking draw or a last-minute winner.

The 2026 World Cup will have more debutants than ever before. With the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA has thrown open the doors. New continents. New footballing stories. New names you’ll learn to pronounce by the second group match.

A handful of these debut teams have been knocking on the door for years. Others came out of nowhere – riding a golden generation, a lucky qualifying draw or just pure will. Some are from regions that never expected to send anyone to a World Cup.

In this article, we’ll introduce every team making their first-ever World Cup appearance in 2026. You’ll learn where they’re from, how they got here, and – most importantly – whether they have any chance of getting out of their group.

Curaçao

U.S., Canada and Mexico didn’t have to go through the qualifiers as the host nations. This created space in the CONCACAF qualifying – which Curacao grabbed right away. The Blue Wave booked their place at the World Cup, staying undefeated in the qualifiers.
Curaçao has seen a lot of development in the sport of late. They have been failing every of their qualification attempts since Chile 1962. They have been a regular at the CONCACAF competitions since, but couldn’t manage to progress into the final rounds of any tournament. But they never have given up their hope. And in 2026, they finally play at the FIFA World Cup finals.

Curaçao is slotted in Group E along with Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador. With Germany missing the knockouts since 2018 and Ivory Coast aiming to go higher in the group, Curaçao ’s chances become slim to none. Even if a higher 3rd place finish would do the trick, it’s highly improbable that Curaçao makes it out of the group stage.

Cape Verde

After 7 consistent attempts to qualify since Korea/Japan 2002, Cape Verde finally booked their spot at the World Cup. Although they came close in 2006, they finished just after Ghana, missing their first world cup appearance then.

This time around, Cape Verde took the top spot of their table in the qualifiers. The Blue Sharks managed to top a difficult qualifying group. They lost just one match in Group D and finished above Cameroon – with 8 appearances at the WC.  Cape Verde’s impressive home form – winning all 5 matches without conceding a single goal – was crucial in their success.

The Blue Sharks debut in the World Cup in Group H facing Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. While Spain and Uruguay are touted to take the top spots, Cape Verde still has a chance to make it to the play-offs. Their current form plays a huge role in their group matchups, and they might just pull off another upset; just like the qualifiers.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan finally booked a place at the World Cup, having tried since 2006. They came close to qualification in 2006 and 2014, but have lost decisive matches against Bahrain and Jordan respectively.

However, this year was different. The White Wolves upped their gears at the qualifiers, and finished just behind Iran. They lost only one match in the process and achieved a historic qualification. Uzbekistan drew crucial matches against Iran and UAE, showcasing organisation and mental strength.

The White Wolves are paired with Portugal, Colombia and DR Congo in Group K for this World Cup. On paper, making the top two places seem impossible for Uzbekistan. But if they could maintain their rhythm from the qualifiers and keep the matches as close as possible while managing a victory – a knock-off place might just come calling.

Jordan

Jordan had been aiming for a  World Cup berth ever since 1986 and almost half a decade later, they finally entered the FIFA WC. The closest they have come to qualifying was back in 2014 – where they lost the inter-continental play-off to Uruguay, a regional superweight.

Jordan had quite a stellar qualifying this year, finishing second in Group B – right after South Korea. Jordan has 4 wins, 4 draws and lost just 2 matches in the process. This automatically booked them a place at the World Cup.

Jordan makes their World Cup debut facing Argentina, Algeria and Austria in Group J at the FIFA World Cup. As debutants, it is highly inaccurate to predict that Jordan would make it to the knockout rounds. Argentina are in red hot form being the defending champions while Austria and Algeria aim to finish higher unlike their earlier performances.
